From the moment I became aware — I don't remember what age — I felt the power of a smile and the power of tears. Tears spread the crier's pain into the listener's sadness. A smile spreads the smiler's happiness into joy for others.

Laughing without being happy — what's that? Laughing at another's pain, sinister laughter, vulgar laughter, laughter-to-smooth-things-over, fake laughter, laughing at something that isn't funny. Telling a joke, not a word out yet — thinking about the punchline they already laugh themselves, killing the listener's mood like someone inviting you to eat and then eating the whole thing alone. The side-mouth laugh trying to hold it in but bursting anyway is probably the most satisfying laugh. I think nobody wants to hold back a laugh — holding back hunger to lose weight maybe, but who holds back laughter? Some hold it their whole lives and never laugh.

So this few-year-old me tried out different ways of laughing, from the sounds to the movements of face and body. Laughing alone in the garden behind the house. Having practiced a few styles, I tried them out and watched how people reacted. Some laughs made others laugh along. Other laughs got me called out: you're laughing fake. Still other laughs had people saying this kid's laugh is eerie.

After a stretch of experimentation, I concluded that each person's natural laugh is the best. Having figured out how to laugh genuinely, I decided I'd laugh loud. Loud, nothing holding it back. When I start to laugh, if I feel it's honest and joyful inside, I turn the volume all the way up. That way I could laugh in every style.
