The six key developmental stages of American cichlids. Four representative videos.
Stage 1: the eggs are laid and fertilized. 3–5 days.
Stage 2: the eggs hatch; the fry can’t swim yet. They are self-sustained by the yolk sac. 3–4 days.
Stage 3: the fry are free-swimming. The yolk is gone; they need food from outside. The digestive system is ready to operate. Growth is at its fastest in this stage. 20–40 days.
Stage 4: the species’ characteristic body shape begins to emerge. The fry can eat adult food, but in smaller pieces so they can swallow. This is considered adolescence. 1–6 months.
Stage 5: maturity reached, breeding age. Males and females begin to pair up 10–30 days before spawning. 6–12 months.
Stage 6: full adulthood. By now the fish has reached its maximum size. Colors are fully expressed. 2–3 years.
