According to Tính Thị Khảo Lược and Nguyên Hà Tính Toản, the Trương family descends from the lineage of the Yellow Emperor. His fifth son, Huy, invented the bow. To shoot a bow, one must draw (trương) the string. Thus, the character Trương is composed of two characters, Cung (bow) and Trường (long), joined together. Some of Huy's descendants took Cung as their surname, others took Trương.

In the 1990 Guinness Book of World Records, the Trương surname held the record as the most common surname in the world, far surpassing Lý and Vương. In early 2006, the Chinese Academy of Sciences ranked it as the third most common surname in the country with the largest population on earth. The Trương surname has been in use for over 4,000 years.
